The purpose of Good Neighbors is to help families and individuals in time of crisis and need with clothing, emergency food and support.

 *     Special Information for COVID-19 Restrictions:

 Green Good Neighbors will be operating during restrictions from 8am-12pm every wednesday in its normal location.

Green good neighbors will not allow the general public into the building. Please pull your vehicle into designated spots and team members will load your vehicle. We ask that when you pull up, you open your trunk and that your vehicle is clean.

Our Mission

Green Good Neighbors is a non-profit organization serving southern Summit County, providing area low income families with a monthly emergency food order, gently used clothing, and miscellaneous household items. Green Good Neighbors is a unit of Good Neighbors of Summit County which operates seven units in Akron, Cuyahoga Falls, Green, Ellet, and Tallmadge. Good Neighbors was founded in 1957 by Laura McClure and Frances Watson who collected clothing in their basements to hand out to those in need. The Green Good Neighbors unit opened in 1968 and is fully staffed by volunteers providing assistance to an average of 200 families a month.

Good Neighbors Incorporated is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) charitable organization and all donations are tax deductible to the extent allowed by the law.

Our Impact

•              Green Good Neighbors served an average of 200 families a month—providing food, clothing, and household items to over 600 men, women, and children.

Where does it all come from?

•              Green Good Neighbors distributed over 153,000 pounds of  shelf stable and fresh food items from the Akron-Canton Regional Food Bank.

•              The City of Green collected and delivered over 75 grocery carts of food (approximately 7,500 pounds!) from the Green Gives Back program that runs from November through December.

•      Green Local Schools collected in excess of 1,600 pounds of food at the Celebration of Education.

•              Thanks to our generous supporters, in December more than 130 families received Christmas presents, providing over 314 children with new, wrapped gifts!

•              Green Good Neighbors averages 55-60 volunteers every month.

 

Hunger Facts

•      1 in 7 individuals in our service area is food insecure, meaning they lack regular access to safe and nutritious food

•      More than 1 in 5 children in our service area is food insecure

•      30 percent of the members of households served by the Foodbank are children under the age of 18 years old

•      80 percent of individuals served by the Foodbank have a high school diploma or higher education

•      81 percent of individuals served by the Foodbank report purchasing the cheapest food available, even if they know it's not the healthiest option

•      1 in 5 families served by the Foodbank report having at least one member that has served in the military

Green Good Neighbors is where the rubber meets the road; in terms of civic service. the feeling of love and community are palpable.

How can I get involved?

            We always welcome volunteers to help with the following needs:

            -Tuesday mornings from 7:00 am to 8:30 am to pick up food at the Akron-Canton Food Bank.

            -Tuesday evenings at Greensburg United Methodist at 6:00 pm to sort clothing.

            -Wednesday mornings from 7:00 am to 1:00 pm to set up, sort and distribute food and clothing, and provide direct assistance to clients. Volunteers are welcome to stay for any amount of time.

            -School Supply Giveaway: Provide basic school supplies, socks, and underwear. Help organize, set up and tear down of the giveaway event in August.

            -Christmas Gift Program: Provide gifts for a family, donate unwrapped gifts, set up and tear down of the giveaway event in early December.
